What is an NA Group?

Each group has but one primary purpose—to carry the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers – Fifth Tradition (The 12 Traditions of NA)

The group is the most powerful vehicle of carrying the message of hope and the promise of freedom from active addiction.  The message is that an addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live.  The only requirement for NA membership is a desire to stop using, this is stated in our Third Tradition.  Any individual NA member can choose to be a member of a particular group and call that their ‘home group’.

You may often hear in NA meetings that ‘service begins at the end of a tea towel’.  Our members also assist with opening up the venue, setting up chairs, purchasing literature, arranging for speakers, paying the bills & importantly preparing refreshments—most of the things an NA group does to host its meetings are pretty simple.  But if one person had to do them all, those simple things would quickly become overwhelming.

That’s why a group elects ‘trusted servants’ as stated by the Second Tradition to help divide the work among the group’s members.  These ‘trusted servants’ can be any willing NA members.

We strongly encourage all NA members to join a home group and volunteer for a service position.
