Hospitals & Institutions (H&I) Committee

What does H&I do?

The purpose of the H&I Committee is to carry the NA message of recovery to addicts who do not have access to regular NA meetings.  H&I members facilitate presentations/meetings that are intended to simply introduce those attending to some of the basics of the NA program as well as share their experience strength and hope.

Where does H&I present?

H&I presentations/meetings are held in facilities where addicts do not have full access to regular NA meetings. These facilities can be:

  • Detox & Withdrawal Units
  • Treatment & Rehab Centres
  • Mental Health Facilities &
  • Correctional Facilities (security clearances required)

How do we present?

H&I presentations/meetings are always conducted by 2 members with a minimum of 6 months of clean time.  The members follow a pre-amble that is structured around the suggested format for that facility.  Our members present to the clients what the NA Program is about, distribute our pamphlets & meetings lists and most importantly share their journey of recovery with NA through ‘experience strength and hope’.  These presentations are also available as an online option.  Online presentations are currently conducted by the regional Online H&I Committee insert online stuff/link here

The WA H&I Committee is always in need of members to volunteer their time to present at facilities, we are looking for members willing to share their journey with those addicts who need to hear the message.  NA members are our ‘resources & recovery warriors’.  The amount of work your local H&I subcommittee does will depend on a variety of factors:

  • The number of treatment and correctional facilities in your area
  • The number of NA members in your area who are interested in H&I service, and
  • The amount of collective experience in H&I work in your NA community.

H&I Committee responsibilities sometimes overlap those of the local PI Committee. For this reason, we encourage H&I and PI Committees to closely cooperate with one another. In some areas, H&I and PI Committees regularly send one or two members to each other’s meetings to maintain communications, thereby minimising the potential for conflict in these two key fields of service.

If you want to be an H&I Presenter please email:  handi.wa@na.org.au or come to our next meeting.

The Hospitals and Institutions Handbook, available here gives you more information on how these important services are conducted.
